Find a Chartered Accountant is the official online directory of member firms registered with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).
Its purpose is to help businesses and individuals find and engage their perfect financial expert, with many member firms offering the first business consultation free of charge.
All firms listed on Find a Chartered Accountant have at least one ICAEW Chartered Accountant and are monitored by ICAEW.
By law anyone can call themselves an accountant. The title ‘chartered accountant’ and the letters ACA or FCA, however, indicate that the accountant has completed the following requirements.
They are a qualified chartered accountant with a minimum of three years in-depth training; agree to be bound by our Code of Ethics and subject to our disciplinary procedures; are required to hold a practising certificate and professional indemnity insurance; and are required to comply with the Practice Assurance regulations and standards, which demonstrates their commitment to quality assurance, and upholding and developing the highest professional standards.
A member firm is typically made up of a group of chartered accountants, rather than a sole practitioner, and they may not all be members of ICAEW.
A member firm providing accountancy services to the public can describe themselves as 'chartered accountants' if they meet ICAEW's definition of a member firm.
